Your Friendly Guide to the Skeletal System 🦴

Meet Your Body’s Framework!

Our skeletal system is made of bones and some cartilage. It’s super important for movement – imagine trying to chew without jawbones or walk without leg bones! 🚶‍♂️ We have 206 bones and a bit of cartilage, split into two teams: axial and appendicular skeletons.

⭐ Team Axial Skeleton (80 Bones)

These bones form your body’s central axis:

1. The Skull 💀 (22 Bones)

  • Cranial Bones (8): Protect your brain like a helmet!
  • Facial Bones (14): Shape your face’s front part.
  • Bonus Bits:
    • Hyoid bone (U-shaped, under your tongue) 👅
    • Ear Ossicles (3 tiny bones in each ear: Malleus, Incus, Stapes) 👂

2. Vertebral Column 🌀 (26 Bones)

Your “backbone” has hollow vertebrae (for spinal cord) and 5 regions:

  • Cervical: 7 neck bones (1st = Atlas)
  • Thoracic: 12 chest bones
  • Lumbar: 5 lower back bones
  • Sacral: 1 fused bone
  • Coccygeal: 1 fused tailbone

Jobs: Protects spinal cord, holds your head up, anchors ribs & back muscles! 💪

3. Ribs & Sternum 🛡️

  • Sternum: Flat chest bone.
  • 12 Rib Pairs:
    • True Ribs (7 pairs): Attach directly to sternum.
    • False Ribs (3 pairs): Connect to rib #7, not sternum.
    • Floating Ribs (2 pairs): No front attachment! 🎈

Together: Thoracic vertebrae + Ribs + Sternum = Rib Cage (protects heart & lungs) ❤️

⭐ Team Appendicular Skeleton (126 Bones)

Your limbs and their “connectors”:

1. Upper Limbs (30 Bones Each Side)

  • Humerus (upper arm)
  • Radius & Ulna (forearm)
  • Carpals (8 wrist bones)
  • Metacarpals (5 palm bones)
  • Phalanges (14 finger bones) ✋

2. Lower Limbs (30 Bones Each Side)

  • Femur (longest bone! thigh)
  • Tibia & Fibula (leg)
  • Tarsals (7 ankle bones)
  • Metatarsals (5 foot bones)
  • Phalanges (14 toe bones) 🦶
  • Patella: Knee cap (covers knee front)

3. Girdles – Your Limb Anchors!

Pectoral Girdle (Shoulders):

  • Clavicle (collar bone) + Scapula (shoulder blade)
  • Scapula has glenoid cavity (meets humerus for shoulder joint)

Pelvic Girdle (Hips):

  • Two coxal bones (each fused from ilium, ischium, pubis)
  • Acetabulum: Socket for thigh bone
  • Meets at front via pubic symphysis (fibrous cartilage)

Joints – Where the Magic Happens! ✨

Joints let your bony parts move. Every movement (even walking!) needs them!

🔥 NEET Super-Important Concepts 🔥

  1. Bone Counts: Total bones (206), Axial (80), Appendicular (126), Skull (22), Vertebrae (26).
  2. Rib Types: True (7 pairs), False (3 pairs), Floating (2 pairs).
  3. Vertebral Regions: Cervical (7), Thoracic (12), Lumbar (5), Sacral (1 fused), Coccygeal (1 fused).
  4. Girdle Structures: Pectoral (clavicle + scapula), Pelvic (coxal bones with acetabulum).
  5. Special Bones: Hyoid (only non-jointed bone), Ear ossicles (smallest bones).

Keep studying – you’re building a strong foundation, just like your bones! 🌟
